South Sudan Assists Hundreds of Sudanese Refugees Fleeing Abyei Conflict
Hundreds of Sudanese refugees have arrived safely in Aweil, Northern Bahr el Ghazal, after fleeing harsh conditions in the disputed Abyei region amid Sudan’s ongoing conflict.
The refugees left Abyei due to food shortages, lack of shelter, and concerns about the approaching rainy season, which could worsen their situation. Many were displaced by fighting between Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) in Kordofan and Darfur.
Mohamed Ahmed Abdallah, a refugee representative, described the journey: “We spent over six months in the open in Abyei with no food… no shelter. It was a situation of hunger. We are grateful to arrive in Aweil and be received by the local authorities.”
Authorities in South Sudan assisted the relocation. Dominic Kang, minister of land, housing, and infrastructure, confirmed that 192 Sudanese refugees arrived in Wanyjok, received by Governor Tong Akeen Ngor. The refugees were transported in 15 trucks, with priority given to vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, and those needing medical care.
Relief packages including rice, beans, maize flour, and cooking oil were provided, funded by the Office of the President. Governor Ngor also encouraged South Sudanese returnees to resume farming and integrate back into their communities.
Lual Awach Mangar, head of the Relief and Rehabilitation Commission, emphasized that additional trips would continue to bring stranded individuals from Abyei before the rainy season intensifies.
