Sudanese Forces Retake Bara Town, Strengthening Position in North Kordofan
The Sudanese army and allied troops have successfully recaptured Bara town in North Kordofan, ousting the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) after days of fierce clashes.
Bara, a strategic town held by the RSF since April 2023, served as a staging ground for attacks on El-Obeid and as a critical point on RSF supply routes from western Sudan. Its recapture strengthens the army’s ability to secure El-Obeid and potentially reconnect with Omdurman, contingent on clearing surrounding RSF positions.
In a statement, the army said it entered Bara with “force, determination, and capability,” vowing to remove all militia and mercenary elements. Videos shared by pro-army sources displayed troops inside the town, destroyed RSF vehicles, and dozens of captured or killed RSF fighters.
Civilian casualties were reported. The Sudan Doctors’ Network confirmed three deaths and 14 injuries from the shelling, condemning attacks on residential areas as a violation of humanitarian law.
The recapture triggered celebrations in El-Obeid, with Governor Abdel-Khaleq Abdel-Latif praising the local population and the army for enduring RSF abuses. During RSF control, residents faced looting, forced home seizures, and displacement, with mercenaries from South Sudan implicated in the violations.
The operation marks a significant gain for Sudanese forces in the ongoing conflict and underscores the strategic importance of Bara in North Kordofan.
