Khartoum – Sudan’s Prime Minister Kamil Idris announced on Saturday that he will bring the ongoing siege of El Fasher in North Darfur before the United Nations General Assembly when he leads Sudan’s delegation to New York next week.
The government confirmed that Idris will replace Sovereign Council head Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, who was initially expected to attend the 80th UNGA session.
The prime minister is set to deliver Sudan’s main address and hold meetings with heads of state, UN Secretary-General António Guterres, and international organizations. The agenda also includes participation in sessions with the Group of 77 and China, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, and other global forums.
Idris said the El Fasher crisis will be at the center of Sudan’s diplomatic push. “I appeal to the General Assembly to work towards lifting the siege on El Fasher,” he declared during the first meeting of the national committee tasked with breaking the blockade.
The announcement comes a day after a Rapid Support Forces (RSF) strike on a mosque in El Fasher killed at least 75 worshippers during dawn prayers.
