RUMBEK – The International Day of Peace was commemorated in South Sudan’s Lakes State with a strong call for young people to lead efforts toward reconciliation and stability.
Held at Rumbek Freedom Square under the theme “Act Now for Peace in South Sudan,” the event was attended by UN officials, government ministers, traditional chiefs, and community representatives.
UNMISS field office chief Christopher Muchiru credited Governor Rin Tueny Mabor for fostering stability in Lakes State, but warned that young people are often manipulated into violence. He urged them to unite with women and local leaders to drive lasting peace.
Minister William Koji Kerjok assured the gathering that the ongoing trial of opposition leader Dr. Riek Machar will not affect South Sudan’s peace roadmap. He called on youths in conflict-prone areas like Pakam, Tiaptiap, and Cueibet to abandon revenge killings.
Youth leader Laat Majak emphasized that young people are “torch bearers of change,” while paramount chief Sebit Kuac Manyiel appealed for UNMISS intervention in troubled communities.
The International Day of Peace, also known as World Peace Day, is observed globally on September 21 each year to promote non-violence and harmony.
