The South Sudan National Police Service says the security situation across the country remains largely calm, despite multiple fatal incidents reported in Juba and Torit on Monday.
Police spokesperson Maj. Gen. James Monday Enoka said national crime levels had dropped, but several isolated cases were being pursued by investigators.
In Juba’s Lemon Gaba neighbourhood, two children suffocated inside an unattended car after three youngsters entered the vehicle around 6 p.m. One child survived and was hospitalized. Enoka said police had opened a negligence case and would hold the vehicle owner responsible.
Later the same night in Lemon Gaba, unidentified gunmen shot dead three people and wounded four others. Enoka said investigators were still determining whether the perpetrators were criminal gangs, rebels, or other groups.
In Torit, no new cases were reported Tuesday, but Monday’s security log included gunfire targeting a commercial vehicle along Torit Road and an assault case in which a father injured his 22-year-old son. The suspect was detained.
Police also reported the arrest of a UN staff member from Burkina Faso and a married woman after they were allegedly caught engaging in a sexual act. The case remains under investigation.
Enoka encouraged the public to continue reporting incidents, saying information flow from communities is crucial for maintaining security.
