Two people have been killed and seven others injured in renewed clashes between the Gak and Lith sections of the Pakam community in Rumbek North County, Lakes State Acting Information Minister William Koji Kirjok reported on Tuesday. The confrontation stemmed from a dispute over a girl who eloped.
Minister Koji appealed for calm and urged the two groups to refrain from taking the law into their own hands.
“Such matters should be brought before the police, government, and chiefs,” he said. “It is sad that lives were lost. We ask the communities not to pursue revenge. Those who attempt retaliation will face legal consequences.”
Despite the incident, Koji said Lakes State remains generally peaceful, though there are concerns about suspected criminals moving between Panyijiar County in Unity State and parts of Lakes State. He assured residents that security forces are actively working to track and deter these groups.
Civil society activist Daniel Laat Kon condemned the violence, noting that similar incidents have occurred before.
“These are social issues that should not result in death,” Laat said. “We strongly urge communities to seek dialogue instead of fighting. The government must also respond quickly and prosecute those responsible.”
Laat called on families of the deceased to avoid revenge and instead allow authorities to handle the matter. He further recommended civilian disarmament as a key step toward lasting peace.
