A night curfew has been enforced in Torit following escalating insecurity and a deadly confrontation that left Deputy Police Inspector Captain John Kamilo dead. Governor Louis Lobong announced the 6 PM curfew on Tuesday, saying it aims to deter further violence and protect civilians.
The circumstances of the attack remain disputed. While state authorities blame SPLA-IO forces, the opposition counters that government troops suffered heavier casualties. Independent verification has not been possible.
Governor Lobong said anyone moving at night risks being seen as a threat by patrolling security forces, and urged residents to comply. Only individuals facing genuine emergencies will be allowed to move, provided they clearly explain their situation to authorities.
Civil society leaders have largely backed the measure. Ukullu Charles of the Peace Link Foundation described the curfew as necessary during such a volatile period. Officials say the restrictions will stay in place until the overall security outlook improves.
