Two men were shot dead in Cueibet County on Monday after a dispute involving a suitor and a girl turned violent, Lakes State Acting Information Minister William Koji Kirjok confirmed.
According to Koji, the suspect had escorted the girl to her family home when a disagreement reportedly arose between him and her brothers.
“In the process, he shot the girl’s two brothers, and they died on the spot,” Koji said, noting that investigations are ongoing. “The security forces are pursuing him, and I know he will be arrested and brought to book.”
He warned against taking the law into one’s own hands, stressing that perpetrators would be held accountable.
Cueibet County Executive Director John Aluak Machut also confirmed the incident, saying it occurred at a cattle camp. He added that calm has since been restored.
“We have handed over three suspects, including the murderer who caused the fighting, to the police, and they are in custody,” Machut said.
Daniel Laat Kon, the Lakes State coordinator for the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO), condemned the killings and urged communities to stop resorting to violence over relationship disputes.
“Our communities need to stop this madness of fighting and killing because of a girl,” he said, calling for dialogue and government intervention to prevent revenge attacks.
