The Northern Bahr el Ghazal Youth Union has filed a lawsuit against the Jonglei State government, accusing it of failing to act after armed youth attacked traders from Northern Bahr el Ghazal in Bor’s Panliet suburb.
Union chairperson George Atem Garang told Radio Tamazuj on Monday that the lawsuit aims to highlight repeated incidents of violence against traders and youth from the state.
“This is not the first time our people have been targeted. Previous cases were never resolved,” Garang said, referring to earlier reports of traders being beaten and stripped during a “gang crackdown” in Bor.
Victims of the most recent attack lost 37 million SSP and $7,000 in cash and are currently receiving medical treatment in Juba.
Youth activist Ngor Deng Matem, who is involved in the case, said even Bor Mayor Jacob Achiek admitted that suspects had been identified but not detained. “That beats my understanding. That’s why I decided to take legal action on behalf of the victims,” Matem said.
Matem added that the lawsuit would continue even if arrests were later made, insisting that full justice must be pursued. A legal team is representing the youth in court.
Meanwhile, CEPO director Ter Manyang Gatwech criticized the legal action, urging dialogue instead. “They should engage authorities through peaceful dialogue to find an amicable solution,” he said.
