WESTERN EQUATORIA – Dozens of families fled their homes Sunday after SPLA-IO fighters attacked a military base in Nagero County, triggering clashes with government troops.
Local officials said the assault on the SSPDF barracks began at about 5:30 a.m. and left one soldier wounded. Civilians ran into the nearby bush after hearing heavy gunfire.
“The situation is calm now, but people are still scared and movement is restricted,” the county executive director said.
Witnesses said that many residents remain displaced and have yet to return. Community leaders are urging Juba to send reinforcements to ensure civilian safety.
Officials from both the SSPDF and SPLA-IO have not commented on the incident.
