Clashes erupted Tuesday in Akobo as government troops and opposition fighters battled for control of the town.
Former commissioner James Kueth Makuach appeared in a video claiming the town had been secured by the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces.
He urged displaced residents to return home and asked humanitarian agencies to restart aid operations, saying the situation had stabilized.
But the Sudan People’s Liberation Army‑in‑Opposition rejected that account.
Opposition-appointed commissioner John Wiyual Lul said their fighters launched a counterattack later in the day and forced government troops to withdraw.
According to him, the government forces retreated to Wech-Deng after the clashes.
